Title: Reflections of week 01 (unit 4)

Week ending: 15.1.2006

Learning activities and tasks covered this week

This week marked the beginning of the final unit of the course. I have a lot to do before the 6th of July, when the final project needs to be completed.

On Monday's chat Andy presented the final key items we need to cover:

  • Learning outcomes
We need to read the expected outcomes in the course handbook and raise any issues in the next chat. We need to establish a schedule for this unit outlining our research, work and the progress of the final project. We are also due to have a final paper written for the final project (100 - 1500 words). This section covers our critical analysis of our progress and understanding of all the work we have done during the course.
  • Blogs
All blogs must be updated weekly with far more information than we have written up to date.
  • External examiner
The external examiner will be reviewing our blogs from the beginning of February
  • Working groups for the final show
We have been split into 4 group and will be pared up with the face to face students too. I have been teamed up with Mark.

As part of the requirements for this term I am due to write a schedule outlining all the tasks I need to cover up to the final show in July. I started reading a book by Erwin Panofsky titled "Studies in Iconology" as well as re-reading (and referencing sources of art) Tristan Manco's "Street Logos".

Panofshy, Erwin. (1972), Studies in Iconology: Humanistic Themes in the Art of the Renaissance.
Colorado: Westview Press.
[ISBN: 0-60-430025-0]

Manco, Tristan. (2004), Street logos.
London: Themes & Hudson Limited.
[ISBN: 0-500-28469-5]

Before the Christmas break I was worried that the direction of my final piece was going in the direction of a presentation and was not developing as a piece of digital art. I now believe I have resolved this issue with a more direct, iconically driven, piece that presents the visitor with randomly generated paths through the piece.

This term I need to resolve a number of issues regarding the physical installation. I have sourced a perspex fabricator and plan to visit him in order to get the physical enclosure completed in its design and built for the show.

My contributions this week

I took part in Monday's chat. During the previous week, over the Christmas break, I registered and got my blog up on iconology.ie. I also finished working on creating a database to stores terms relating to the study work I have carried out during the course.

I plan to host a questionnaire on the site with various icons and images for people to submit in their own interpretations (this is still to be completed).

This week I started work sketching rough ideas for the icons and images I plan to use in my final project. I also created a new main screen for the final project. Over the next 2 weeks I will work this up into a demonstration model for the final. The piece will be totally icon driven, using both iconic narratives and menu system. Images will be randomly presented on the main screen drawn from a number of themes including:

  • work
  • life & death
  • money & poverty
  • love & sex
  • travel
  • peace & hate
  • war
  • danger
  • politics
  • art
  • food
  • animals
  • people
  • objects
  • desire
  • communication
  • ancient symbols & culture

Images and content will be juxtapositioned within the piece as the visitor moved further through it. Supporting the final project will two elements - results of an online questionnaire and video of people discussing their interpretation of icons and images.

Identify any ideas and concepts you found difficult to grasp

This term will be busy with a large amount of work, research and contributions. I am still a little concerned with the balance of study time and work and will try to allocate more time to the course.

The most important thing(s) I learnt this week

I need to plan my time this week, as there are a lot of items that need to be covered this term.
